Our practice

D for Diabetes is a small, personalised practice made up of passionate credentialled diabetes educators. Inger Wang started the practice in 2011 with a mere 20 patients, but we have grown to treat over 600 people across all of Western Australia. We have patients travelling from Broome, Port Hedland and Karratha to be treated by our specialist team.

In September of 2020 Inger sold the practice and commenced her transition to well earned retirement. Daina Smith, who has worked within the clinic since 2018, has taken over the helm and continues to provide the care and experience that we are known for.

We believe in a holistic approach to treating our patients and we do so without judgement. We believe our patients are the most important feature of our practice and we treat everyone with respect and dignity through our personalised treatment solutions.

Whether you have Type 1, Type 2 or Gestational Diabetes, we have a treatment that will work for you and your lifestyle. If you have an Enhanced Personal Care-Plan (EPC) from your GP, that includes diabetes education, you are entitled to get a Medicare rebate. We are always happy to speak to you about how you can get this, just get in touch with us today.

We are a dedicated team of health professionals who are keen to help you manage your diabetes whether you have type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes.

About Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition where you don’t produce enough insulin causing the blood glucose level to rise, especially after you have had a meal. There are different types of diabetes, Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes which only occurs during pregnancy. At D for Diabetes we are credentialled diabetes educators with extensive experience in all types of diabetes management.

Type 1 Diabetes.jpg

Type 1 Diabetes

This is an autoimmune chronic condition where the body doesn’t produce any insulin. This is not caused by your lifestyle, you have done nothing to get this. People with Type 1 Diabetes need to inject insulin from pens or have an insulin pump; we can help with either of these options.

Type 2 Diabetes.jpg

Type 2 Diabetes

You are more at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes if you live a sedentary lifestyle and make poor dietary choices, but it can also run in your family. To effectively manage Type 2 Diabetes, it’s important to know how to adjust your lifestyle to get the best blood glucose control. At D for Diabetes we can help create a tailored program to suit your lifestyle, and help you manage any medication associated with Type 2 Diabetes.

Newly Diagnosed Diabetes.jpg

Newly diagnosed

Whether it’s Type 1, Type 2 or Gestational Diabetes, it is always a concern and raises many questions, which we can help answer for you.

Gestational Diabetes

This type of diabetes only occurs during pregnancy if your blood glucose levels are too high. While it can be daunting to be diagnosed with GD, it doesn’t have to be. Our credentialed diabetes educators will help you manage GD to get your baby the best start in life.

Pumps and Smart meters

Using the latest technology will help you manage your diabetes

Insulin Pumps.jpg

Insulin Pumps

An insulin pump is a small electronic device about the size of a mobile phone (the standard phones, not the big ones) that will deliver all the insulin you need. The insulin is delivered through a thin tube attached to your stomach and is completely pain free. This means you won’t have to manually administer insulin after every meal. While the insulin pumps are mainly for people with Type 1 diabetes, it can be used by people with Type 2 as well and they are particularly great if you have an active lifestyle.

Bolus Calculator Apps.jpg

Bolus Calculator Apps

A bolus calculator app is a smartphone app that is used to calculate quick acting doses of insulin for carbohydrates and corrections. They will calculate your insulin dose based on your current blood glucose level and the amount of carbohydrates you are about to eat. The app will also prevent you from stacking insulin because of an insulin tracking system incorporated into the calculator.

CGM.jpg

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) & Flash Monitoring (FGM)

CGM is great if you want to see your blood glucose levels at all times. It can be used together with an insulin pump or as a freestanding devise depending on your needs and wants. There are different systems to suit you; some where you can get warnings for highs as well as low blood glucose levels and others where you can scan your blood glucose levels but not get any warnings.

Partners

At D for Diabetes we work closely with providers of the latest technology in diabetes care and regularly attend education and professional development to keep up to date with the knowledge and skills to help you manage to the best of your ability.
