It's not easy to find out that you have diabetes. But for thousands of Australians, learning about their diabetes is the first step toward feeling better and living a longer, healthier life. Here's what you need to get started on the path toward improved health and wellbeing.

Type 1 Diabetes: You may have experienced excessive thirst and frequently needed to go to the toilet. You might also have experienced unplanned weight loss and blurry vision. Some people will be diagnosed after being admitted to hospital with diabetes ketoacidosis (DKA)

When you go to the doctor they will find high blood sugar levels. When you get blood tests done the doctor can confirm if it is Type 1 Diabetes.

When you are first diagnosed it is important to have a line of contact to discuss ongoing questions about medication, and how to manage the condition in different situations such as eating out, sport, illness, pregnancy etc.

What is the best treatment option for you? is it an insulin pump or a smart glucometer or maybe an app on the phone to help with the insulin dosing?

We will discuss all these things and also your specific concerns and questions.

DKA - diabetic ketoacidosis: This is a potentially fife-threatening complication to type 1 diabetes. It can occur when people are first diagnosed or if they are unwell with an infection or gastroenteritis. Symptoms may include vomiting, abdominal pain, deep gasping breathing, excessive thirst and frequent urination. It can progress to unconsciousness and needs to be treated in hospital.

Type 2 Diabetes: When you’re diagnosed with diabetes it can be overwhelming. Your doctor will provide you with a lot of information and ask you a number of questions about your eating patterns, weight history, blood pressure, medications you might be taking, any family history of heart disease and any treatments you have received for other health problems. If appropriate, the doctor will ask whether you smoke or drink. If you’re a mother you may also be asked about your child or children’s health.

We can help you to clarify what food you should eat and how that affect the blood glucose level. We will also discuss how exercise affect the blood glucose and why it’s so important with regular exercise.

Do you need to do any home testing of your blood glucose? if so how should you do this to get the best information for your health professional to determine the best treatment for you?

Is lifestyle modification enough or do you need medication?
